TRACKS

Wangaratta Speedway roars to life this Saturday night with the powerful V8 Super Sedans returning to the venue after a little hiatus, with some of Victoria’s best drivers and a couple from New South Wales hitting the track to do battle.

Along with the Super Sedans, competing in their state series will be the visiting Grand Prix Midgets for a round of their state point score, plus local heroes in sedans for Ladies, Juniors, Standard Saloons and Sports Sedans.

Bendigo’s Brad Wicks, fresh off a trip to United States where he had a taste of racing on the fastest and biggest dirt tracks available, is determined to this season take overall points honours from last year’s champion Mick Nicola Jnr. from Traralgon. On the other hand, Mick Nicola Jnr is determined to defend the title and will have his hands full with the return of Ash Bergmeier to the field along with a couple of New South Welshmen Darryl Moon and Lyle Harris.

Grand Prix Midget racing continues to get stronger and with 11 entries in the second event for their season, all looks good steady increase just after Christmas. Recent Jason Glynn Memorial winner Trevor Perry is in the field as is multiple times champion Dennis Myers.

The younger brigade of Chris Fowler the winner of last season Wangaratta Cup, Lisa Chalcraft and Jason Crawford the current Victorian Champion will be looking to keep Perry and Myers at bay and let’s not forget the Australian Champion Paul Perry who didn’t have the strongest of starts at Avalon and is ready to go for broke now.

The $1,000 to win Demolition Derby has been promoted hard by club member Kenneth Mankey with some of the craziest drivers heading to Wangaratta to crash their cars and take a big cash win. The field could be as much as 30 cars with 23 confirming to the promoter they are ready to be there, which will mean complete and absolute mayhem for a huge amount of time this Saturday night to close out the show.

Standard Saloon racing will be interesting with Andrew Robl, Trev Goldsworthy, Sean Connolly and Trevor Evans the most like combatants for the win, while in Sports Sedans Luke Fallon, a winner at Alexandra already this season, will have his hands full with Martin Heiner, Nathan Shortis, Rhys Collins and the Powell brothers, Liam and James, who are all local racers.

Ladies Sedans and Junior Sedans are programmed and will compete depending on numbers.

Gates to enter will swing open at 1pm for fans with racing from 4pm and enquiries can be made to 0427 308 976. The venue operates with a licensed bar and as such BYO is strictly forbidden.

Entry for the event will cost fans the following: Adults $20, accept for club members and aged/disabled who pay $15 and $10 for teenagers and young adults between 12 and 18 whilst under the age of 12 will be free entry.
